Kitchen cookware has been in existence since time immemorial. Accordingly, the ideals and the right materials have been transient over the years. Today two of the leading materials available are Teflon and ceramic.
These cookware materials are revered for their nonstick properties, making it easy to make sticky foods such as eggs, crepes, etc. As such, you can easily clean them.
So, if you're looking to get new cookware, one question you've probably found yourself asking is, what is the difference between ceramic and Teflon cookware?
The basic difference between these materials lies in their efficiency in releasing food. Generally ceramic and Teflon and non-stick but Teflon has a reputation for lasting way longer than ceramic. On the other hand, manufacturers of ceramic cookware position their materials as the safest alternative, which is understandable and valid for reasons we will touch on subsequently.
But this is just a high-level overview. Now let's Kick things off with details.
Teflon is more of a brand name than a cookware material itself. Cookware under the Teflon brand usually adopts the PTFE coating using PFOAs. Since it was developed in the 1930s, Teflon cookware has gotten a lot of sticks. And this is rightly so. The use of PFOAs as the coating is accompanied by a truckload of potentially dangerous effects. To mention a few, these effects range from several diseases to cancers.
For this reason, Teflon has removed this PFOA coating from its cookware ever since. Now, today, people still call Teflon cookware PTFE cookware. But this is very incorrect. Teflon doesn't use these materials for its coating anymore and as such, it has no reason to be called PTFE cookware.
Today, it is one of the safest cookware available. On top of the safety, it embodies satisfactory nonstick properties which makes it easy to clean within a few seconds.
We've probably heard of ceramic pots and ceramic pans. Of course, these are made of ceramic entirely. But ceramic cookware takes a deviation from that. It is not made from ceramic. And you don't fire at a temperature higher than 1000 degrees Fahrenheit like you normally do for ceramic pots.
Instead, ceramic cookware materials feature an extra layer of sol-gel coating. So, whenever you heat the cookware, this layer secret a very minute amount of silicone oil into the cookware surface. This helps you create a nonstick surface making the cookware easy to wash.
However, note that the silicon gel secreted is not unlimited. The longer you use your ceramic cookware, the more it loses its nonstick property. So during the first month, you are bound to witness and enjoy a superior cooking experience and food release. However, as things progress, you start losing this feature.
Besides the extra sol-gel layer, ceramic cookware also features a base material. This base material is usually made from cast iron or aluminum or steel. The fact that this base material is not ceramic has its advantage. Firstly, ceramic does not conduct heat easily which makes it not suitable for cooking. Besides ceramic is also very heavy which could take a toll on its mobility. So, the materials used as base offer the cookware the best alternative to these features that are missing in actual ceramic.
The manufacturing process for ceramic cookware is similar to that of Teflon as well. Essentially, it all begins with the core material forming the base of the pan. Then it is followed by a layer of ceramic coating.
Now it is difficult to answer the question of which is better, ceramic or Teflon. We can only explain their differences using different criteria. So in this article, we will explore their performance, safety, maintenance, durability, and of course how much you might be spending on either cookware.
Both materials work satisfactorily to keep your food from sticking to the pan. However, Teflon edges ceramic a little bit in this regard. Of course, there is no scientific proof to back up this fact. But if you take your time to evaluate actual customer reviews for each material, you will find out that a lot of customers still complain bitterly about their food getting stuck to ceramic.
Now let's compare the safety
Firstly, let’s reiterate that never Teflon cookware are now PFOA-free, which makes them pretty safe. Nonetheless, there is still another rising concern. Some experts confirm that Teflon cookware tends to release dangerous fumes whenever you fire them above 500 degrees Fahrenheit. But these experts further conclude that the effects are not so pronounced. Besides, the American Cancer Society submitted that Teflon-coated cookware poses no identifiable risk to human health.
Generally ceramic is regarded as the safer option. But to ensure maximum safety, you need to buy a ceramic with a trusted supplier. Don't just buy ceramic cookware from your street vendors or the flea market. Also if you noticed that your ceramic shows any sign of damage, or perhaps the initial purpose of creation was not for cooking do not use it! If you buy unregulated ceramics or those that are not intended for cooking, you may subject yourself to dangerous materials like lead and cadmium.
We cannot differentiate Teflon and ceramic cookware based on their ease of maintenance. Both materials perform superiorly in this regard. They are both very easy to use and you don't have to worry about special cleaning routines or detergents. But be sure not to use both materials in your dishwasher or your oven. Besides, if you use abrasive sponges or baking soda on these materials, you are potentially damaging them.
Similarly, when it comes to durability, there is really not much difference between them. How long both materials can last rely bank heavily on how much and how rigorously you use them. Note that when they are past their lifespan, we will start noticing surface scratches, wears, and a gradual loss in effectiveness.
But remember that you don't expect nonstick cookware to last a lifetime. Regardless of the quality these materials are just not designed to rival cast iron and steel materials when it comes to longevity. But here, the average Teflon cookware will last you a bit longer than the average ceramic cookware.
Again, remember individual products and the quality you buy may introduce some discrepancies in this projection. So you might find out your Teflon pan surface scratching way before Ceramic starts scratching if you buy a relatively low-quality Teflon cookware.
Ceramics is not the cheapest option out there. Neither is Teflon. But generally, ceramic cookware tends to be more expensive than Teflon cookware. If you are going for ceramic be sure that you are not choosing low-quality or cheap ceramic pans. As mentioned before you most likely find and fill materials like cadmium and lead full stop so be sure to make the wisest decision.
A material that you can use with several cooktops and the oven is of course more valuable than a material tailored for single use. For nonstick cookware, the versatility relies greatly on specific usage. But generally, never try to use Teflon under high heat conditions, such as in your oven. As mentioned above using Teflon at high heat may subject you to potentially dangerous toxic fumes.
But ceramic promises you safety over a wide range of temperatures. As such, it makes it suitable for oven use that is over 600 degrees Fahrenheit. So essentially you will get more versatility when you go for ceramic than when you go for Teflon.
You are most likely to find Teflon in the traditional grey or black color. However, ceramic, on the other hand, comes with a lot of aesthetically pleasing finishes. It has truckloads of colors and designs that will transform any cooktop from basic to exceptional. So in terms of appearance, ceramic reigns supreme.
Well, the tug-of-war between ceramic and Teflon still has no winner yet. Or maybe the winner actually depends on what you want. If you are looking for something colorful with good environmental friendliness and tailored for the oven. Or perhaps, if you are not convinced by the harm-free declaration of Teflon, then ceramic might be the right fit for you.
But if you are not so worried about PTFE. But instead, if you want a material that we offer you don't give it, and the best value for your money in terms of durability be sure to think Teflon.
