Polyethersulfone is a high performing polymer, serving as the hotspot of shedloads of benefits. From terrific flame resistance, to alluring transparency, the material features a wide range of interesting characteristics. Little wonder it has gained nonpareil application across automotives to medical and the average consumers applications.

So, in this article, we will explore some of the applications contributing to the traction PES has been gaining over the years.

What Do You Need to Know About Polyethersulfone?

Polyethersulfone, also known as PES, is a thermoplastic belonging to the sulfone family. One of its terrific inherent characteristics is its excellent dimensional stability, making it resistant to high temperatures. Even at high temperatures, you can expect minimal tendency of thermal expansion.

Even at temperatures as low as -100°C, it makes little or no changes, retaining its electrical properties as well. Even better, PES does satisfactorily to resist electromagnetic radiation and potentially inimical chemicals. The material further doubles as an ideal electrical insulator due to its sufficient dielectric constant.

All of these makes PES stand out for different specific application or usage. With its remarkable thermoplastic engineering, high rigidity and low sensitivity, it is appropriate for use in tight, little dimensional change and wide temperature range spaces.

PES is an ideal material for applications that require good dimensional stability, including manufacturing mechanical parts such as valve pistons, to pump housings, etc. With its good compatibility, PES mixes well with chemicals. Also, its good hydrolysis resistance makes it an important element in the manufacture of anesthesi, and dialysis machine control plates in the medical industry.

That’s a high level overview. Now, lets delve into the details.

What are the Applications of PES?

Here are some of the key areas where you can use polyethersulfone.

Industrial Application

PES is best suited for high-temperature coating formulations and for making special adhesives. This is due to the prominent hydrologic resistance inherent to it. The high performing polymer further makes up an integral part of bearing brackets and shells of mechanical parts. With glass fibre-reinforced PES resin, machinery is made for effective output. On top of that, these parts parts crafted from PES plastic material have a high creep resistance, hardness, and dimensional stability.

PES is also used as a vital component in the manufacturing of pumps and valves. Much more, PES is used for seals and conveyor idlers, oil level indicators, packing for absorption and distillation e.t.c. because of the stiffness, mechanical strength, and continuous operating temperature.

Automotive Application

PES plastic material is used in the manufacturing the reflective parts for car lighting lamps. It allows these components reach a peak temperature of about 200℃ without any worries about deformation. It is also an integral component of the aluminum alloy reflective parts of cars. PES plastic materials are also made into automotive parts, such as electrical connectors, electronic, and electro-mechanical control components, seats, windows, masks, water pumps, and oil pumps.

With PES’s resistance to oil, petrol, and high temperatures, it makes an ideal replacement for metal parts in the automotive industry. It can also be used in casings, water pumps, turbochargers, and ventilators.

PES usage is also found in the battery caps, bearing cages, ignition components, oil control pistons, oil pumps, and transmission parts.

Electrical/Electronic Application

Outstanding aging resistance, inherent flame retardance, and excellent electrical properties are the ideal requirement for connector housings and HDD applications. PES provides all of these features.

Other essential features PES offers in the electrical/electronic industry are low shrinkage, mechanical property retention, high dimensional stability, and low moisture absorption. In the world's advanced HDD internal parts, all of these features are necessary.

To mention a few, you’ll find the application of PES in products, such as, coil bobbins, contactors, printed circuit boards with two-dimensional and three-dimensional spatial structures, switch parts, lamp holder bases, battery, and battery housings, capacitor thin molds, etc.

PES materials are the first choice for electrical engineering structural materials. This is because of its long-term use of temperature which can range to 180 degrees and also provides stability and good insulation.

Medical Application

PES is used for the transparent portion of anesthesia masks. Even with repeated steam sterilization for rescue, PES doesn't lose its material properties or appearance. More so, because it is durable, non-toxic, and has a high break-resistant and transparency, PES is used commonly for pharmaceutical filter housing.

PES is also used for molded heart valve sizes because of its more dimensionally accurate features and transparency which gives maximum visibility. As a result of its high physical strength and clarity properties, implantable catheter ports are made with PES.

Dental instruments are mostly manufactured from PES due to their high strength, rigidity, and toughness. The use of steam, ethylene oxide, hydrogen peroxide, or gamma radiation sterilization methods is usually engaged for the proper cleansing of such instruments. The process can cause damage to the instruments if they are not strong enough to withstand the chemical actions on them. PES is unique and can withstand more than 1,000 cycles of steam sterilization without any significant loss of properties.

Membrane and Filtration

In the past few years, the growing world population and industrial breakthroughs have left several detrimental impacts on the environment. Some of these effects are the shortage and contamination of water resources. One of the most effective solutions to overcome the resulting water scarcity and crisis shortly is to treat wastewater. Among the various methods used for wastewater treatment, such as reclamation and desalination, membrane separation is one of the most effective processes.

Among the various polymers used, PES has an outstanding separation performance and high thermal, chemical, hydraulic, and mechanical stability, and has been used in a wide range of membrane applications. PES, with its high performance, can be used to make hollow fiber, tubular and flat sheet types of microfiltration and ultrafiltration membranes for water treatment and hemodialysis applications.

Aerospace

PES resins can also used in aircraft interior parts, including brackets, doors, windows, e.t.c. This has been proven to improve safety. Polyethersulfone resin also has excellent transmittance to radar rays, and in the past, it has been used for radomes to replace epoxy parts.

Lighting

PES provides an ideal plastic material for lighting and optics. These products may include reflectors, signal lights, etc. With its UV-stable lighting parts, PES light can be used outdoors for a long time.
