Polyethersulfone has great application value. Its long-term use temperature can be up to 180℃, which is fairly suitable for various molding processes. Moreover, its mechanical strength, resistance to chemical corrosion and high-temperature creep, and other excellent properties can meet the requirements of specific parts of modern industry. To improve the performance of polyethersulfone, more and more material manufacturers combine glass fiber or carbon fiber with polyethersulfone. These are generally called modified PES materials. Two typical modified PES products include glass fiber reinforced and carbon fiber modified PES resins.
With the reinforcement with glass fiber and carbon fiber, the modified polyethersulfone has better mechanical strength and improved properties. Thus, its application range has been correspondingly expanded, especially in engineering, industrial accessories, electronics, and electrical, medical, and health care.
For example, modified PES is suitable for repeated sterilization of high-temperature steam, dry steam, radiation, and other sterilization methods in medical equipment. Modified PES has been widely used in some high-end industrial manufacturing fields due to its small linear expansion coefficient, high dimensional stability, oil resistance, heat resistance, hydrolysis resistance, and corrosion resistance.
Glass fiber and carbon fiber have good interfacial adhesion with polyethersulfone, so they both play a very practical role in PES material.
The relevant test found that the reinforcement of glass fiber and carbon fiber can obviously decrease the tear and other non-adhesive abrasions. Thus, the products made from modified polyethersulfone can have increasingly improved wear resistance.
The finished products made from glass fiber or carbon fiber reinforced PES have very strong ultraviolet rays. With surface coating or metallization, these products can have more effective protection.
In addition, PES resin can also be modified by coloring. The coloring methods can be adding pigments to resins or powder or dyeing the finished PES products.
Generally, in order to improve the coloring efficiency of the resin and facilitate the operation, a proper process method is needed. Usually, the required pigments are added to PES resin to make a color masterbatch in high concentration. Then mix the masterbatch with PES resin, which will be extruded to granules to achieve PES resin's coloring.
Due to the relatively high processing temperature of PES resin, ordinary organic pigments cannot meet the processing temperature requirements. Organic pigments will decompose during the melt-mixing and extrusion of PES resin. Therefore, the commonly used pigments are mainly inorganic pigments, such as titanium white, iron red, cadmium red, chrome yellow, cobalt green, etc.
