PES is the shorter form of polyethersulfone, also known as PES resin, a transparent amorphous resin in amber. Polyethersulfone belongs to polysulfone, which is the family of high-performance thermoplastic.
PES resin is a thermoplastic high polymer material with comprehensive properties since ICI UK had developed it in 1972. At present, PES rein is one of the most widely used special engineering plastic. According to different manufacturing techniques, PES resin can be made into granules and powder of different sizes.
Polyethersulfone has excellent heat resistance, physical-mechanical property, insulating property, etc. In particular, PES has outstanding reliability to high temperature and rapid temperature change. Its stability can be retained when it is continuously used at high temperatures and under the condition of more rapid temperature change. Therefore, PES resin has been widely used for many industries like electronic, household appliances, membranes, etc.
Compared to polysulfone, PES has higher heat resistance and rigidness. It has outstanding creep resistance and dimensional stability under high temperatures. Its thermal deformation temperature is 203℃, the glass transition temperature is 225℃, and the UL temperature is 180℃。 The continuous use temperature of PES is from 180℃ to 200℃, so its mechanical property won’t change at 200℃.
High Mechanical Property
Among the thermoplastics, PES has a very high mechanical property. For example, the tensile strength is 84.3MPa, the flexural modulus is 2.65GPa, the percentage of breaking elongation is 5-6%, and the notched impact strength is 91J/m.
PES is resistant to gasoline, engine oil, lubricating oil, other oils, freon, and other cleaning agents. Besides, its resistance to solvent cracking is the best among amorphous resins. However, it can be dissolved in polar solvents such as chloroform and acetone, so please be careful when using it.
PES has the same impact resistance as polycarbonate when there is no notches. However, when there is notches, the radius of the notch affects a lot the impact strength. The smaller the notch radius, the lower the impact strength.
Stable Insulating Property
PES has excellent insulating performance, which can remain stable under 200℃.
Compared to polysulfone, polyethersulfone has better fusion processibility and lower melt viscosity, with molding shrinkage of only 0.6%.
PES is characterized by a small linear expansion coefficient and low temperature reliability. Significantly, the 30% glass fiber reinforced PES resin's property can still maintain similar to aluminum at a temperature of up to 200°C.
PES has excellent resistance to the hot water or stream of 150 to 160℃. Even under the high temperature, it won’t be eroded by acid and base.
Non-toxicity
Polyethersulfone is a safe material approved by USA FDA, and it also meets the requirements of No.434 and No.178 announcement of JMHW.
Flame Retardant
PES has great self-extinguishment even without adding any flame retardant, which can be up to UL94V-0 grade.
