Both polyethersulfone (PES) and polyetheretherketone (PEEK) belong to special engineering plastics. They are a kind of thermoplastic resins that are widely used in many different industries due to their excellent heat and chemical resistance, mechanical property, and good processibility. However, PES resin and PEEK resin are different in some ways which leads to different applications. Next, let’s explore how PES and PEEK resin differentiate.
Polyethersulfone is a high-performance thermoplastic polymer in the polysulfone family. PES resin has the highest grade of heat resistance among amorphous resins. With an amorphous molecular structure, PES resin has a transparent amber appearance. PES resin has excellent high temperature resistance for a long period, and its long-term heat resistance temperature can be up to 180 ℃. In particular, polyethersulfone resin can keep stable performance under continuous use at high temperature and the condition of rapid temperature changerefore. Thus, pes resin is an ideal material for the applications that require high dimensional stability within a wide temperature range. Besides, pes resin has outstanding electrical properties, good dimensional stability, corrosion and creep resistance, and high mechanical strenth, which make it widely used in machinery, food-process equipment, water membrane, automotive parts, aerospace, information technology, energy, petrochemical, household appliances, and many other fields.
PEEK
Polyetheretherketone is an organic thermoplastic polymer in the polyaryletherketone family. PEEK is currently the type with the highest heat resistance grade and the best comprehensive performance among special engineering plastics. It is a semi-crystalline thermoplastic resin with the long-term heat resistance that exceeds 250 ℃. When it is reinforced by adding carbon fiber and glass fiber, its heat resistance and mechanical strength can be greatly improved. In addition, PEEK can increase its molecular weight to improve its toughness and fatigue resistance. Then adjust its melt viscosity to meet the requirements of injection molding. PEEK has high-grade heat resistance, radiation, fatigue, corrosion resistance, excellent mechanical and electrical properties.
PES resin not only has excellent heat resistance and mechanical properties, but also has good processing properties. Beside extrusion molding, injection molding, compression molding, blow molding, suction molding and foaming, it can also be used for secondary processing such as coating, ultrasonic welding, mechanical processing, and solvent bonding.
PEEK
Good processibility is one of the most important characteristics of PEEK. Even the complex large products can be directly molded with appropriate molding equipment, and the injection moldings do not require post heat treatment. In addition to injection molding, extrusion molding, compression molding, wire coating, powder spraying and spinning are also available to be processed.
Both PES and PEEK resin are very practical engineering plastic, which can be pressed, injected, extruded by regular machines and equipment. What’s more, they can even be recycled. Due to a series of excellent properties, PES and PEEK material are playing important roles in many different industries.
